How To Treat Depression
A variety of effective treatments are available for individuals with depression. However, treating depression is not as simple as taking a pill and immediately getting better. Treatments must be customized for each individual with depression and must frequently be combined to achieve effective and lasting improvement and hopefully resolution of depressive symptoms. Additionally, depression may recur at anytime, requiring either repeat or new treatments.
Medications are effective but can take weeks to months to reach full therapeutic effectiveness and are usually not sufficient by themselves. Psychotherapy is commonly used in conjunction with medical therapy, and this combination of treatments has been shown to provide the fastest and most sustained relief from depressive symptoms.
The following is only intended to provide a brief overview of several of the primary treatments available for depression. If you think you may have depression, please seek assistance from a specially trained medical professional immediately.
