Why Has The World Gone CBD Mad?

2 MIN READ • 22nd October 2019

2019 has seen a huge surge in the use of CBD. In the medical sense, it’s being used to suppress symptoms of anxiety and psychosis, but now CBD is making its way into beauty products, energy bars and even chewing gum.

With a wide variety now available across the UK, we ask the experts what’s the reasoning behind why the world has gone CBD-mad?

The science

CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the lupulin glands (also known as trichomes) of hemp and is one of more than a hundred different phytocannabinoids that are unique to cannabis. It’s a legal, non-psychoactive compound that has a history of use dating back thousands of years. In fact, Queen Victoria used CBD for her cramps in the 19th century!

CBD molecules interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system by binding to key receptors, which is thought to provide a variety of therapeutic benefits including helping to achieve an internal regulatory balance. The CB1 receptor is mainly found in the nervous system and can help regulate brain function and the CB2 receptor is most prominent in immune cells through the bloodstream.

Research on the health benefits of CBD is ongoing, however studies to date have suggested that CBD could be used as a natural treatment for a variety of health concerns, including relieving anxiety, improving sleep, increasing focus and reducing inflammation.

*Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their doctor before considering the consumption of CBD.
