We all go away with our best intentions to retain some fitness and not completely fall of the wagon while we're on holiday but that's often easier said than done! Luckily Healthy Chef Steph aka Steph Elswood shares her top tips with us to staying fit while away...
While a holiday once used to be nothing more than lounging by the pool and sipping copious cocktails, nowadays we’re increasingly more conscious of maintaining our health while abroad. According to a recent survey by Hostelworld, 71 percent of Brits are more or equally as active when they’re on holiday as when they’re at home, and almost a third (30%) seek out action-packed holidays. But keeping up with your fitness regime while you’re on holiday doesn’t mean you need to pack half the gym! Here are some simple steps everyone can take to make sure you still keep active even when you’re away.
1. Get moving
The majority of the time when you’re on holiday, you don’t have access to a gym or a fitness class but there are so many ways to keep fit while away. One of the best ways to explore a new area is running, whether you are in a city, on a beach or somewhere rural you can always grab your trainers and take a jog. It’s easy, free and requires only your trainers.
2. Turn your room into a personal studio.
Wake up early, find a corner of your room and get to work – this is a great way to start the day right and is a great mood-booster! Set a timer for 45 seconds on and 15 seconds off and choose different body weight exercises. After 25 minutes you'll soon be sweaty mess and feel like you've worked really hard.
Take five minutes at the end of the day to reflect on what you have done. Try to find three highlights and one improvement. The highlights allow you to be grateful and the improvement is a personal goal, the goal could be fitness related or something completely different. It’s important to be your own coach and your own biggest fan. Self-love is a must! Celebrate what you are doing well and encourage yourself to achieve. It forces you to take a second to appreciate where you are and what you have experienced. You might even find it hard to pick only three highlights, especially when you’re travelling and exploring!
4. Get your friends involved
Hostelworld's research also found that more than a third (35%) of young people prefer to exercise in groups than alone. Go on a run, swim in the sea or time each other in body weight workouts. Share your fitness tips with your friends, you will be surprised how much you can learn from each other. Whether you’re on a week-long holiday or on a long trip, travelling, exercising in groups is way more fun and you’ll often find you push yourself more because you have people around you, motivating you to give it your all.
5.And if all else fails, try this...
If you’re stuck for workout ideas, try the following exercise moves Steph created recently.
