Paula Radcliffe: How I Fuel My Runs

2 MIN READ • 15th September 2020

If you’ve been increasing your running during lockdown, you’re not the only one.

Couch to 5k had a record number of downloads (850,000 as it happens) when the pandemic hit, and what’s more, 67 percent of Brits have vowed to keep up their healthy habits as we get back to some sort of normality.

So, if you’re wondering how to keep your fitness routine interesting, why not take heed from a marathon world record holder no less?

Paula Radcliffe, three time winner of the London Marathon shares how she fuels her runs and advice on how to switch things up.

Start The Day With Avocado On Toast

“Avo on toast is not just for Instagram! The nutritious breakfast can be paired with FLORA light margarine and a poached egg for a simple, healthy protein-packed breakfast, with the added benefit of Omega 3 and 6.

“It’s a personal favourite of mine and gives me the boost I need to get the day started.”

Refuel With Vegetable Pasta

“Your body is a temple, give it all the nutrients it needs to function, and more, to excel if you are exercising or running outdoors.

“I find that mixing vegetables with pasta is the perfect veg and carb combo that one can ask for. It’s super easy to prepare and really delicious.”

Balancing A Busy Life and Refuelling

“It can feel hard to take the time to refuel properly when training, especially if you are working a full-time job, are a full-time parent or both!

“My favourite pre-race fuel is wholemeal toast with FLORA, tomatoes and topped with cheese. It’s easy, quick and delicious!

“I’d encourage you all to try this if you’re exercising and in need of a quick and tasty recipe to keep you going.”

Mini Meals

“Less and more – a great habit to adopt when becoming active is to eat less but more often!

“Whether you ‘ve just started, or have been running for a long time, your body will thank you for the sustainable energy you give it throughout the day.

“This means, up your meal’s intake from three to five and lower the portion size. With this, you will feel less full and more energetic throughout the day, keeping you focused whether you are on the track or at work.”

Recovery is Key

“A great way to keep your fitness momentum is to ensure you eat recovery foods to enable your body to repair and rest ahead of your next challenge – and what better way to do it than with a nice treat?

“Think, berries, whole grains. FLORA has a delicious homemade granola recipe that is perfect to give your body the minerals and nutrients it needs to ensure you are able to keep running without burning out.

“If you’re feeling daring in the kitchen, you can also try FLORA margarine’s recipe for chocolate orange energy balls which seem to be very trendy right now.”

Involve the Family

“If you’re like me, you’ll see running as not just self-care but also a sociable activity that can be enjoyed with friends and family.

“Get a buddy to run with you, it will keep you motivated to stay on track and inspire you to push yourself to even larger goals. It’s also a great way to keep the whole family active.”
