Niomi Smart: “Running Has Been My Meditation”

3 MIN READ • 27th September 2020

The last time Niomi Smart featured as our final say star for the December issue, she spoke about releasing her own skincare range with one goal in mind: enabling our planet and our society to flourish.

Fast forward a few months, and Smart’s dream has become a reality.

We caught up with the founder of Smart Skin to find out all about the products, plus how she uses exercise for mindfulness and what lockdown has taught her.

What Is Your Daily Routine?

“I’ve just started a yoga teacher training course, so that’s in my morning routine at the moment.

“I’ve also discovered the power of breath work, which has had a really positive impact on my mindset. By slowing down, I can really take the time to zone back into how I’m feeling and focus on self-love.”

What Have You Learnt From Lockdown?

“It’s actually given me the tools to learn how to deal with life when I feel like things are going a million miles an hour.

“Focusing on yourself is sometimes seen as quite selfish, but everyone deserves to do things that make us happy and confident.”

Tell Us About Your New Skincare Range?

“I’ve been developing Smart Skin for a couple of years and I’ve been so inspired by my online community to create these four products within the range.”

Golden Jelly Cleanser

Formulated with natural Glycerin, Sweet Almond Oil and Orange Fruit Water, Golden Jelly Cleanser is a purifying cleansing balm, gentle enough to be used on the sensitive eye area.

Its gel-like texture will melt down into a nourishing oil to cut through dirt and deeply cleanse the skin. Grape Seed Oil reduces sebum and unclogs pores, revealing glowing and revitalised skin.

Super C Moisturiser

Super C Daily Moisturiser is the Smart Skin super formula – packed with fruit botanicals combined with the latest in anti-pollution skincare technology.

A lightweight formula soaked with Superox-C protects the skin from pollution damage and is proven to boost collagen, luminosity and reduce fine lines. Grape Juice Extract and Vitamin E work to nourish and protect the skin.

Miracle Meta Mask

Combined with the antioxidant and skin-soothing properties of Camellia and Olive, Miracle Meta Mask is a blend of locally sourced and indigenous ingredients renowned for their immediate and effective results on the skin.

Glycolic Acid works hard to gently exfoliate, brighten and renew the skin’s surface, accelerating dead skin cell turnover, revealing a glowing complexion, whilst Glycerin works to nourish and hydrate.

Multi V Elixir

Loaded with 12 super oils, our Multi V Elixir Facial Oil quenches skin’s thirst for hydration and nourishment. A rich concoction of ingredients, including Omega 3 fatty acids, Evening Primrose, Chia Seed, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Blueberry and Milk Thistle minimise the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and improve skin’s elasticity.

Whilst Avocado, Rosehip, Jojoba, Turmeric, Tea Plant and Frankincense combine to replenish the skin’s moisture and restore a buoyant glow.

How Do You Like To Move Your Body?

“I love to run. Running is like my meditation. I was living in the country during lockdown, so I was able to go out on these stunning runs, which makes a change from the London roads!

“I’ve actually stopped doing HIIT sessions because not only were they quite intense on my body, but they were also having a negative effect on my mind too.

“I think if you’re always on the go and super busy all the time, and your workouts are the same, you’ll never really have time to slow down.

“So that’s why the running and yoga go so well together.”

How Do You Switch Off?

“I think whether it’s your job or not, everyone is guilty for scrolling mindlessly on Instagram, and we know that phones can be incredibly addictive.

“So when your career depends on being online so much, it’s really important for me to find time to switch off in the evenings.

“Yoga is so brilliant for that. It helps you to just be present and spend that one hour on your mat without your phone.

“There are so many things you can do and I think it seems quite daunting because people say ‘I don’t have an hour’, and that’s completely normal.

“So many people have busy lives, but if you can find a bit of time to invest in your skincare routine, for example, I would say to never underestimate a few minutes to yourself.”
