Five minutes with… Denise Van Outen

2 MIN READ • 22nd February 2017

The West End and former Strictly star talks to us about music, memories and being a mum

On her daily menu

I normally have breakfast after the school run, which is usually poached eggs mixed with avocado on toasted rye or sourdough bread. I like to have a baked potato topped with beans and cheese or tuna, mayonnaise and sweetcorn for lunch, or a warming bowl of soup. Dinner is often grilled chicken or fish with lots of vegetables.

On her rest day treat

It definitely has to be a cheese board with lots of crackers and chutneys – that’s my weakness.

On her workout playlist

It’s a mix of dance anthems. I love anything loud and fast to psyche me up.

On her favourite workout move

Anything dance related – especially Zumba!

On her motivation

I keep motivated by knowing life can be short, so you need to make the most of it. It’s important to try to stay fit and healthy and to laugh a lot.

On her dream workout partner

It would be Ryan Gosling – he’s very pleasing to the eye!

On her greatest fitness achievement

When I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. I trained really hard for it and it was incredibly tough but the feeling of finally reaching the summit was totally worth it.

On her favourite place to exercise

I love to work out on Hampstead Heath. You get amazing views of London from there and I have wonderful memories of training with my late friend and personal trainer Nicki Waterman, who I miss greatly.

On balance

It can be hard to keep fit as a mum. I try to incorporate running around with [my daughter] Betsy and working out. I like to combine fun activities with exercise for the both of us – I find that things such as swimming and cycling work well.

On future fitness goals

I’d love to take on another physical challenge in 2017 – I’m hoping that I’ll be able to cycle across part of southern India to raise money for charity.
