Blue Monday: Doing This Could Boost Your Wellbeing

Blue Monday, the third Monday of January, is notoriously the most depressing day of the year, with a combination of fr-eezing weather and money problems to blame for the label.

And, if you haven’t already, January 19th was predicted as the day that people are most likely to give up their New Year’s resolutions, so with motivation and determination falling by the wayside, it’s no wonder you’re feeling a little blue.

But, you’ll be pleased to know that the solution is accessible, free and available tonight: sleep. According to a new study of 2,000 adults by Pro Plus, sleep is the key factor to make it through the day slump-free.

Adding to this, Brits can look forward to hitting the dreaded afternoon slump at precisely 2.17pm as post-lunch fatigue sets in. Depleted energy levels, lack of sleep and stress are amongst the top reasons for feeling like you’re going to drift off at your desk.

Elite sport sleep coach, Nick Littlehales, said: “Sleep is an important health pillar, which enables us to eat well, exercise well and recover well.

“Daytime slumps are a completely natural form of recovery; afternoon fatigue develops because we try to recuperate in one block at night, despite the fact that we’re designed to recover in shorter periods more often.

“It’s important to take moments to rest and recover.”

A good night’s sleep is paramount for your wellbeing, but there are steps you can take (literally) during the day for a boost of energy.

“Try disappearing for 20 minutes over lunchtime to have a walk, sit on a bench or eat your lunch can enhance your energy levels in the afternoon,” advises Nick.

So, how do I take the perfect nap?

“The key nap duration is 20-30 minutes. This can be easily factored into a lunch break but remember to set an alarm. Caffeine takes 15 to 20 minutes to kick in so can be effective in giving you an energy boost out of a midday nap.”
